About The Program

LIVE IN COMMUNITY. THINK THROUGH YOUR FAITH & LIFE. SERVE OTHERS.
The Elzinga Residential Scholars Program is a one-year intensive experience of living in Christian community, considering questions of faith and life, and being on mission as a student at the University of Virginia.

LIVE IN COMMUNITY. One of the great opportunities of university life is living with other Christian students and developing deep friendships. The Elzinga Residential Scholars Program facilitates this type of community by housing the male participants at the Center for Christian Study (128 Chancellor Street) and the women next door to the Study Center (132 Chancellor Street). The Residents learn to share their space and their lives with their housemates, and they will be guided in these relationships by the staff at the Center for Christian Study.
THINK THROUGH YOUR FAITH & LIFE. College raises many questions about the meanings of life and faith. The Elzinga Residential Scholars are given the opportunity to thoughtfully consider these important issues in conversation with the Christian faith and way of life through readings, discussions, lectures, and retreats throughout the year. Each Scholar will also be mentored by a Center for Christian Study staff person or a mature same-gender community member. This combination of intellectual reflection, focused discipleship, and practical application has proven to be transformational for students' lives and minds.
SERVE OTHERS. A central component of the Christian faith is love and service for your neighbors. In response to this call, the Elzinga Residential Scholars are asked to practice hospitality and intentionally represent Christ in the university community. Their responsibilities will include hosting events at the Center for Christian Study (such as the Move-In Day Lunch), organizing discussions about faith and life, preparing Thursday dinners, and reaching out to classmates with the love of Christ. The staff at the Center for Christian Study will provide training, oversight, and support for the execution of these opportunities to serve.
