Violence Against Women

What is the Bible, and Where Did It Come From?

     Instructor: Drew Trotter

Audio recordings of the sessions, below (Week 2 was not recorded):

Week 1: September 17 session (21.3 mb, mp3 file)

Week 3: October 1 session (25.9 mb, mp3 file)

Week 4: October 8 session (33.3 mb, mp3 file)

These lectures/discussions intend to give the interested student an understanding of how the Christian should view the Bible. Our time will be divided between two separate but related issues. First, what are we to believe about Scripture? Is it God's Word? In what sense? Is it sometimes wrong? How should we as modern Christians understand the authority of the Bible for our beliefs and practices? Secondly, where did the Bible come from? How was it put together? What about manuscripts and what do they mean? Why do different Christian groups have different books in their Bible? What is the Canon and why is it relevant today? Why are there so many translations and why do they some s differ? These and other related questions will form the substance of our time together.

DREW TROTTER has taught biblical studies, systematic theology and cultural apologetics at the seminary level for more than twenty-five years. He received his Ph.D. in New Testament Studies from Cambridge University and is the author of the forthcoming Show and Tell: How to View a Movie Responsibly (Baker Academic). The author of many articles and reviews, Drew has published in Books & Culture, Christianity Today, Critique, and a number of other publications. He lectures regularly on film and culture at seminaries, churches and colleges throughout the eastern United States.
